Amarula is originally a South African cream liqueur which was manufactured in South Africa. It is made with sugar, cream and the fruit of the African Marula tree (Sclerocarya birrea) which is also locally called the Elephant tree or the Marriage Tree. It has had some success at international spirit ratings competitions, winning a gold medal at the 2006 San Francisco World Spiritis Competition.
Amarula has teamed up with FIFA to be an official licensed product for the 2010 World Cup. New limited edition packaging sports the official trophy in gold as a centrepiece against a black backdrop, with a gold-coloured soccer ball attached to the brand’s traditional gold tassel around the neck of the bottle.
